Important Things to Consider in Home Design

When considering a home design, it stands to reason that the first thing to come to mind will be the appearance of the house. After all, this is the most obvious part of a home, and since even "small" houses are quite large compared to their surroundings, it is an even more prominent factor. However, this isn't the only thing you should think of when you go to an architect that creates the plans for custom homes.

If you ask people who have lived in their houses for a while, you will find that there are often things that they would change if they could do it over again. One of the most common problems they cite are areas that are hard to clean. Examples of this are the popular overhead beams where builders often place plants. These look great in model homes, but they are big dust collectors in real life. Other problem areas are small nooks, open cabinets, and similar nuances.

Other aspects of custom homes that are potentially problematic include places where walls join at odd angles. These can be hard to navigate at night, causing banged knees and other such unpleasantness. More than one person has ended up wishing that they chose a straight hallway with entrances at 90-degree angles.

Finally, your home design should include any purpose-built rooms that you need. Many builders suggest setting up all smaller areas as bedrooms so you can say you have a lot of them if you want to resell your house. However, you must live there before any resale is done. Your life will be easier and more enjoyable if you set up "extra" rooms specifically as home offices, sewing rooms, or any other type of unique area you need.
